Arco di Settimio Severo, Foro Romano

Speranza

The splendid "Arco di Settimio Severo", built entirely of marble and surviving almost unscathed, is one of the latest monuments to be added to the Foro Romano.

The arch was dedicated by the people and the senate to the Emperor and his sons Caracalla and Geta in AD 203 on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Settimio Severo's accession to the throne.

It commemorated his Parthian victories.

The summit of the arch was once adorned with statues of the Emperor and his two sons in a quadriga with soldiers on either side.

During the Middle Ages the arch was surrounded by two towers, one of which was used as the campanile of the church of SS. Sergio and Bacco.
