Basilica Massenzio, Roma

Speranza

Known as the Basilica of Constantine, this great building was begun by Maxentius in AD 308, and competed by Constantine in 313.

The basilica is adjacent to the Foro.

The Roman basilicas were halls of justice and commercial exchanges.

Architecturally, basilicas form a conspicuous link between classic and Christian building, for they served the early Christians as models for their churches.

The striking feature of The Massenzio Basilica, the most magnificent basilica that ever stood in Rome, was the enormous span of the vaults that roofed not only the central nave but both the north and south aisles.
