Bernini's Colonnade, Piazza S. Pietro, Roma -- and a failed plan.

Speranza

Note the wonderfully sculptural and powerful effect of Bernini's massive free-standing columns of travertine. Bernini's design for the Piazza was begun in 1656 and underwent several changes before it assumed its present aspect eleven years later.

Bernini had intended to enclose the Piazza by linking the two long colonnades but the plan was never carried out owing to the death in 1667 of his patron Alexander VII.
