The design of the octogonal duomo by Guarini is very complex and beautiful: a strong pattern of intersecting arcs seen against a diaphanous, dissolving background.
The effect is achieved by the number and disposition of the windows, not only in the lantern, but in the dome itself.
The windows are set at odd angles, reflecting as well as transmitting light like the mirrors in a diorama, and laid in an open ring (a unique feature) round the inner octagon of the dome.
