First Opera at Monte Carlo -- Feb. 8 1879

Speranza

Well, opera may not be an entirely accurate description of the work.

It was a one-act 'opera comica', Il Cavaliere Gastone. The composer: Planquette; the librettist: Pietro Veron.

Since Planquette's thing was a short thing, a concert was added to make up a full evening's entertainemtn.

In the auditorium it was another brilliant evening.

The theatre looked resplendent, diamonds sparkled from every part and the ladies vied with one another in beauty and elegance.

The orchestra performed satisfactorily, meriting the compliments of the public.

Planquette conducted.
