Giulio Romano, Affresco, Palazzo dewl Te, Mantova

Speranza

The Palazzo del Te, Mantova, was designed and decorated under the direction of Giulio Romana for Federico Gonzaga, son of Isabella d'Este, between 1525 and 1535. The Palazzo is a quadrangle of brown-gold stone on the edge of the town enclosed by a range of single-storey buildings.

It was intended by Federigo for use as a summer-house.

Nothing now remains in any of the rooms but the marble fireplaces, the plasterwork and the frescos by Giulio Romano and his assistants of gods, satyrs, nymphs and Bacchantes rioting over the walls and vaulted ceilings.

This one is in the Sala di Psiche.

Giulio Romano was a pupil of Raphael, but thie infuence in these frescoes is that of Michelangelo.
