Il Duomo di Pisa

Speranza

File:Duomo di Pisa, facciata.JPG

The Duomo, the Baptistery Dome, and the Campanile in Pisa, together with the Campo Santo, form one of the most famous groups in the world.

It is still an unforgettable experience to come upon these dazzling, diverse, and yet wonderfully harmonious shapes rising from the wide stretch of close-cut grass and clover in which they stand apart from the rest of the town of Pisa.

The Duomo was built in the second half of the 11th century, the Campanile dates from 1174, with a belfry added only in 1315 because of subsidence, and the Baptistery was begun by Diotisalvi in 1152, continued by Nicola and Giovani Pisano in the following century, and completed in the 14th century.
