Ponte Rotto, Roma

Speranza

Formerly known as the "Pons Aemilius", the Ponte Rotto in Rome was begun in 179 BC by M. Aemilius Lepidus and Marcus Fulvius Nobilitor, and finished in 142 BC by P. Scipio Africanus and L. Mummius.

The martyr brothers Simplicius and Faustinus were thrown from this bridge into the Tiber in the time of Diocletian (or else they fell).

The oldest of the Tiber stone bridges, it was three times heavily restored under different Popes before the inundation of 1598 carried away two of its three arches.
