Speranza

Guarini's San Lorenzo  makes a rich impression with its lavish use of coloured marbles, red, grey, green, gold, black, and white, and with its great volutes and tempestuous angels.

The plan is more impressive than the elaborate texture of this interior.

It is basically an octagon, the sides of which curve into the central space.

These swelling curves are pierced by big arches with side openings.

Of the compartments behind, two lead east and west into the chancel and the portico, while of the remaining six those to the north and south form shallow recesses and those in the diagonals are developed into deep chapels.

Through the red marble columns of the openings can be glipmsed white statues in black marble niches, flandking rich altars surmounted by sculpture.
