The Marte is a colossal figure carved by Sansovino for the Ducal Palace in Venice.
Commisisoned in 1554, the "Marte" is described by Vasari as
"the most beautiful state in the form of a giant, seven braccia high, symbolising the power of the Republic of Venezia by land."
----
Thirteen years later they were installed on the stairway to the Palace.
Tintoretto regarded the "Marte" as the supreme Venetian statue.
