BRANDINI, "ERCOLE E CACO"

Speranza

The story of Bartolommeo Brandini's "ERCOLE E CACO" goes back to the year 1508, when a marble blcok nine and a half braccia high and five braccia wide was ordered by Piero Soderini for the use of BUONARROTI.

The block was intended from the first for the PIAZZA DELLA SIGNORIA, for which Buonarroti was to carve a counterpart to the "DAVID" in the form of a grup of "ERCOLE E CACO".

The marble was not delivered till 1525 and handed over to BRANDINI. Domenico Buoninsegni, who was alienated by BUONARROTI, had persudaded Clemente VIII that his requirement would be met if the rivalry between BRANDINI and BUONARROTI were stimulated.

Brandini made a model:

ERCOLE, IL QUALE AVENDO RINCHIUSO IL CAPO DI
CACCO CON UN GINOCCHIO TRA DUE SASSI, COL
BRACCIO SINISTRO LO STRIGNEVA CON MOLTA
FORZA, TENENDOSELO SOTT FRA LE GAMBE
RANNICCHIATO IN ATTITUDINE TRAVAGLIATA; DOVE
MOSTRAVA CACCO IL PATIRE SUO E LA VIOLENZA
E'L PONDO D'ERCOLE SOPRA DI SÈ, CHE GLI FACEVA
SCOPPIARE OGNI MINIMO MUSCOLO PER TUTTA
LA PERSONA. PARIMENTE ERCOLE CON LA TESTA
CHINATA VERSO IL NIMICO OPPRESSO, E DIGRIGANDO
E STRGNENDO I DENTI, ALZAVA IL BRACCIO DESTRO,
E, CON MOLTA FIEREZZA ROMPENDOGLI LATESTA,
GLI DAVA COL BASTONE L'ALTRO COLPO.
