VITTORIA, NETTUNO

Speranza

The statue shows NETTUNO stilling the waters to protect the Trojan fleet.

It has the dynamism of a figure from the Sistine Ceiling casdt in bronze.

RISING NOT from the circular base that imposes a uniform pattern on so many of Vittoria's statues, but FROM AN OVAL BASE formed by a shell floating on the waves, the NETTUNO is set lengthwise, one foot in front, and one behind, with a sea-horse between his legs.

THE EFFECT of this design is remarkable enough when the bronze is looked at from the sides, but still MORE astonishing is its FRONT view, where the heads of NETTUNO and the sea-horse appear in PROFILE.

More unambiguously even than the marble of SAN SEBASTIANO in SAN SALVATORE, the NETTUNO by Vittoria proclaims the imminent emergence of BERNINI.
