-- is Pizzetti's. He was working, perhaps not to his greater fame, on a libretto by D'Annunzio. Pizzetti wanted simplicity; D'Annunzio gives him elaborations.

The frontispiece of D'Annunzio's tragedy shows the 'fall of Ippolito' -- 'la caduta d'Ippolito, Ippolito caduto -- the iconological topic by excellence.
