OTHER THAN PORTRAITS and RELIEFS -- ... 'statuaria romana'

Speranza

Besides portraits and reliefs there are other major categories of ROMAN SCULPTURE.

ONE is what Kleiner calls the 'idealising' sculpture (I wouldn't).

--- This represents

DIVINITIES
MYTHOLOGICAL FIGURES
HEROES
and
ATHLETES
with GENERIC (i.e. not portraiture) FEATURES.

While some of the statues of these subjects were
replicas of NON-ROMAN originals, some were
ROMAN PASTICHES of two or more original
prototypes.

STILL OTHERS were _NEW_ (yes: NEW) ROMAN
ORIGINAL creations
designed for SPECIFIC contexts.

FOR EXAMPLE:

the cult statue of MARTE for the TEMPLE of MARS ULTOR
in the FORUM OF AUGUSTUS.
