What triggered Mapleson to stage "Carmen" at the Haymarket was the fact that he came across the prospectus of the 'season' at Covent Garden where "Carmen" was featured as one of their numbers.
But he wanted "Carmen" for him alone.
The Covent Garden prospectus was dated middle of March, 1878, with the announcement of "Carmen" for the coming season which would start on April 2nd.
