Toscanini laughed extravagantly at Miss Merman's down-to-earth deportment and admired HER LUNG POWER.
In the first intermission, Toscanini shoot up and swept the audience with his opera glasses, quite unaware that the people had caught sight of him and were looking at him.
A man came up and said, "Excuse me, are you Maestro Toscanini?"
The Maestro, not turning a hair, answered innocently, "No, I am sorry", and the man, incredulous and still gazing at him, retreated.
