Porteriana: "OUT OF THIS WORLD"

Speranza

Based on the Amphitryon legend.
Book by Dwight Taylor and Reginald Lawrence.

"I Jupiter, I rex"

As was generally the case, a major hit was followed up with a similarly conceived, highly awaited major flop.

Porter provided some of his most intricate lyrics, but his skill was overshadowed by a laboured book, and this was roundly attacked for questionable taste -- verbal and visual.

The uncredited George Abbott took over from de Mille, but the problem needed more than doctoring.

Porter provided some uncharacteristically lovely songs -- I am loved, and the waltzing "Where, oh where" -- along with "From this moment on".

The show's most striking feature was the most colourful, lavish physical producdtion yet seen on Broadway.
