The History of the Costume Institute

Speranza

A mere five years after the cancellation by Montebello of the CHANEL show, CHANEL and Lagerfeld infected the Metropolitan Museum of Art after all, in a show that Kimmelman called "a fawning trifle that resembles a fancy showroom."

KIMMELMAN also intimated that by reversing course, MONTEBELLO was trafficking in hypocrisy.

The same week KIMMELMAN's critique ran, NEW YORK magazine put the Chanelised Party of the Year on its cover!

No longer was the NEW YORK magazine criticizing the Metropolitan Museum of Art; instead, it lionized the planners and participants, most especially Anna Wintour and Emily Rafferty, who'd just replaced McKinney as president.
