The BroAdmoor is a resort in the southwestern Broadmoor neighborhood of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Built in the early 20th century as the "Grand Dame of the Rockies", it was one of the finest resort destinations along the Rocky Mountains during the age of railroads.

The resort with hotel is a popular conference destination for businessmen and government officials.[1]

The hotel sits at an elevation of 6230 feet (1900 m) above sea level.

The Broadmoor is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

For the original dairy, see Broadmoor, Colorado.

The Broadmoor Hotel is a 5-star/5-diamond Historic Hotel of America with over 700 rooms, 18 restaurants and cafes, and a world-class spa.

The hotel is a member of "Colorado's Finest Hotels"[13]

The Broadmoor Golf Club has three 18-hole courses and was designated with a best family trip award,), the resort's tennis facility is rated #3 by Tennis magazine,  and the Broadmoor Lodge is a Teller County facility accessed by Old Stage Road.

The Broadmoor Fire Protection District is a GNIS-listed building which houses equipment for the resort and surrounding area.

For the history of the larger neighborhood (USGS-designated populated place) with the El Pomar Carriage House Museum, the earlier Broadmoor Park, & the 1891 Broadmoor Casino; and for the nearby Penrose tomb  named for Will Rogers, see Broadmoor, Colorado and Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun.

The current Broadmoor Hotel was built at Cheyenne Lake in 1918 after Spencer Penrose had seen Europe's finest hostelries and decided to build a lodge with no expense spared.

On December 15, 1918, the Broadmoor name was copyrighted —the hotel subsequently attracted a wealthy clientele in the early 20th century, drawn to the beauty of Pikes Peak, as well as to the mountain air which aided recuperation from tuberculosis.

The adjacent fields were used for aircraft operations beginning in 1919 and in 1928, the "Broadmoor's polo field and grandstand [were] built near The Broadmoor stables west of the hotel".

In 1930, the Broadmoor Riding Arena was built on the west shore of Cheyenne Lake, and the Broadmoor's hangar was built at the airport east of the city.

The resort,  the Manitou Incline, and the Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway transferred to the 1937 El Pomar Foundation after Penrose's 1939 death (cf. the 1940 Broadmoor-Cheyenne Mountain Cog Railway, Broadmoor-Cheyenne Mtn Highway, and Broadmoor Hotel Water & Power companies).

The resort's Ice Palace opened "in the renovated riding arena" on January 1, 1938 (renamed Broadmoor World Arena c. 1961),  and the resort's Will Rodgers Memorial Stadium  was built in 1938 across the lake from the hotel.

The arena hosted the World Figure Skating Championships five times between 1957 and 1975 and was the home of the Broadmoor Skating Club.

The resort's 1959 Ski Broadmoor was sold to an Aspen corporation and closed shortly after in 1991, and Chet Murphy was the Broadmoor's tennis professional for 40 years.

In 1988, due to the Tax Reform Act of 1969, the foundation sold its majority interest in the 3 businesses to the The Oklahoma Publishing Company (OPUBCO),  and the Broadmoor World Arena was torn down in April 1994.

President George W. Bush and Vice President Cheney visited the Broadmoor, and a NATO Summit has been held at the site.

In 2011 the resort received 110 awards.

The hotel received 23 awards, the restaurant (Penrose) received 20, the meeting rooms 14.

The golf courses 30, the spas 15, and 8 tennis related awards.

The hotel also received 6 renovation honors.

In 2012 Forbes ranked the resort with 5-stars, marking 52 straight years, AAA's 5-diamond ranking marked 36 straight years, and Forbes 5-star restaurant ranking (2012) makes the Broadmoor one of three Hotel/restaurant combinations to receive the ranking.

  • Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star (52 years in 2012)
  • AAA Five-Diamond: 1 of 3 hotels in 2011 consecutively making the list for 35 years (cf. Camelback Inn, Arizona, and The Greenbrier in West Virginia).
  • American Express Departures Magazine Readers' Favorite Award[citation needed]
  • Travel Weekly Magellan Award – Best Luxury Resort (2008) Silver award[30]
  • Web Marketing Association – Web Award for Hotel and Lodging Standard of Excellence (2007)
  • Zagat Survey Exceptional Rating – Resorts
The hotel's "Penrose Room" restaurant was added to the Five-Diamond list in 1977[31]

For clay target and golf championships at this resort, e.g., 1991 USSCA National Championship & FITASC Pan American Championship, 2008 United States Senior Open, and 2011 U.S. Women's Open Golf Championship, see Broadmoor Shooting Grounds and Broadmoor Golf Club.

The 1981 "Deannexation & Reannexation of the Broadmoor Addition" added the resort to the city as 1 of 5 additions (cf. Ivywild, Cheyenne Canon, Skyway, and Stratton Meadows) for which the Colorado Supreme Court "overturned a district court decision that voided the annexation".[33]

On September 15, 2011, it was announced that Philip Anschutz and his Anschutz Corporation would purchase all the Oklahoma company's assets and the transaction was completed in October 2011. President and CEO Steve Bartolin (2011 Independent Hotelier of the World[34]) continued to run the hotel.[35]
