Grice ed Agricola

 AGRICOLA, CNAEUS JULIUS (AD 40-93)

Agricola made his name as a politician, and was the Roman governor of Britain AD 77-84. His son-in-law, the historian Tacitus, wrote a biography of him, claiming that in his youth Agricola had had a great passion for philosophy but that his mother had done her best to rid him of it. She was largely successful, but in his later years Agricola claimed to have acquired and retained a sense of proportion from his years of philosophical study.
