Porteriana: "AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS"

Speranza

"Look what I found you"
"Should I tell you I love you?"

Welles, who had earned a reputation for being wildly creative and totally uncontrollable, returned to Broadway and ran amuk with this wildly insane extravaganza.

This was Porter's biggest flop.

It lost a record $30,000 in a day when a big musical could be produced for $100,000.

In trying to cover the ballooning costs, Wells sold the motion picture rights to recent Porter producer Mike Todd.

Todd made the highly successful 1958 movie version without Welles (or, for that matter, Porter).
