The Ca' d'Oro was built between 1420 and 1440
At that time Renaissance architecture had already taken root in Florence.
But Venice remained attached to the Gothic style of Northern origin, to which the citdy had given an Eastern look by its choice of motifs and colours.
In addition to its ornamental lace-patterned marble, the "Ca' d'Oro" originally had a polychrome decoration heightened with gold, whence its name.
