Tura founded the school of Ferrara. He was the official painter to the court of the Duca d'Este.

Tura could adorn the subjects of his frescoes and paintings with a symbolism understandalble in his day but meaningless today to all but the initiated. The right hand of an organ door shows the Virgin. In the middle distance a little squirrel scampering across a transversal bar is the enigmatic and distracting element in the picture.
