The Piazza della Signoria was embellished in the course of teh 16th century by the Fountain of Neptune.

A design project for this fountain had been the object of a competition in which Benvenuto Cellini, Giovanni di Bologna and Bartolomeo Ammanati had taken part.

Ammanati was the winner in 1575, with a design full of fantasy and life, dominated by an enormous white marble Nettuno.
