Speranza
This is part of the cycle, "The story of the corss" in the Church of St. Francis at Arezzo.
The emperor Constantine, on the eve of his battle with Maxentius, whose army was larger than his own, fell into an uneasy sleep.
An angel appeared to him and pointed to a cross of light with the inscription:
IN SIGNO HOC CONFIDE ET VINCES
---- trust in this sign and you will conquer.
-----
This painting is very simple in conception, and curiously impersonal.
Its suggestive power does not come from the expressions of the impassive figures.
It comes only from the painting itself -- from its serene colours, its light, distributed with supreme artistry, and from the purity of its forms.
