In the foreground of his "Victory of Lepanto", the Turkish and Venetian galleys in the thores of battle recall the great year of 1571, when Venice defeated the Turkish fleet.
This grlous event should have allowed Venice to keep Cyprus , its last great Eastern colony, but in effect only gave the Republic one short final respite, before its commercial power collapsed for ever.
