The first great Venetian sculptor of the Renaissance, Antonio Rizzo, was directly influenced, in the statue of Eva above by a piece of Greek sculpture: the "Chaste Venus", from which he copied the pose and beauty of the body.
This influence can be explained by the relations of Venice with the eastern Mediterranean.
Certain Venetians would no doubt have discovered in the course of their business trips Hellenic works of which the rest of Italy as yet knew nothing.
Rizzo, goldsmith and sculptor, is also famous for his work as an architect. In Venice Rizzo made the Foscari Arch, flanked by statues of Adam and Eve, among various other works.
