Pliny speaks of SYMPLEGMATA, i.e. 'closely involved groups'.
A symplegma, then, is a closely involved statuary group.
Plinio considered that
CEFISODOTO and
ELIODORO,
the sons of PRASSITELE,
were good at the symplegma, or rather, just did them.
"I LOTTATORI", found in 1583, Roma.
