Speranza
UNDER CLEMENT VIII (ALobrandini, 1592-1605), the facciata of the PALAZZO SENATORIO was renovated and upon suggestion of the superinendant of the works, PROSPERO BOCCAPADULI, a fine FOUNTAIN was constructed in the centre of the double staircase, at the sides of which were placed the TWO RIVER GODS already mentioned.
It was at the same time that MARTINO LONGHI the elder was entrusted by GREGORIO XIII (Boncompagni 1562-1585) with the reconstruction of the bell-tower to which he gave the aspect it still retains.
AFTER THE COMPLETION of these grand works, a long interval of inactivity set.
Finances were exhauxted, the municipal treasury empty and the CONSERVATORI of the epoch were obliged to be content with insignificant restorations of the existing buildings.
