By the beginning of the eighteenth century, Haskell/Penny think (not all may agree) successive rulers of Florence (read: the de' Medici) "MANAGED TO MAKE of FIRENZE a rival to ROMA itself." They are referring to "LA TRIBUNA". Chapter VIII: "FIRENZE: L'impatto della Tribuna".
