Speranza
The Palazzo Farnese was begun for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the future Pope Paul III, by Antonio Sangallo, and continued by Michelangelo, who was responsible for the second story overlooking the courtyard, which he embellished with heavily framed windows.
Contrary to the rule usually observed, that the upper floor should be lighter than the lower floor, Michelangelo made this upper floor heavier to convey a feeling of tension and energy.
Vertical continuity was assured by clusters of three Corinthian pilasters superimposed to the Ionic pilasters.
