Speranza
THE PROJECT OF BUONARROTI for the CAMPIDOGLIO bears testimony to his genius.
BUONARROTI planned the COMPLETE transformation into a MONUMENTAL WHOLE of the existing buildings, which lost their primitive significance upon the decline of communal autonomy.
THE SACRED HILL was to be enclosed by EDIFICES worthy of containing the REMAINS of past glories, substituting on this site ARTISTIC and historic supremacy for the civil power of former times.
THE EXECUTION of the design does not appear to have caused BUONARROTI any difficulties, although the lack of space and the constructions already existing must have necessitated determined proportions, for BUONARROTI succeeded in creating a THOROUGHLY HARMONIOUS blending of lines and masses, seemingly incompatible with the limited area.
BUONARROTI's plan completely TRANSFORMED the Palazzo SENATORIO and that of the CONSERVATORI, opposite to which a new "PALAZZO", alike to this, was to be erected.
THE PALAZZO SENATORIO was embellished with a new facciata, furthermore adorned with an IMPOSING DOUBLE STAIRCASE, whcih according to the plan should have led to a LOGGIA, the aim of which was to recall an old historic loggia, while at the same time it would have appropriately enhanced the entrance to the large audience hall.
