AT THE TIME OF BUONARROTI's death, the general aspect of the PIAZZA DEL CAMPIDOGLIO was more or less unchanged except for the statue of MARC'AURELIO, which had finally been BROUGHT from the LATERAN and placed in the centre of the piazza, notwithstanding the protests of the CHAPTER OF the LATERAN BASILICA against its removal from the site of its original collocation in front of the PATRIARCHATE OF THE LATERAN; also a part of the double staircase in front of the PALAZZO SENATORIO had already been constructed.
