The SECOND period of ROMA was the Renaissance and Baroque (1450=1750), during which the many famous churches, palaces and squares were constructed.
Of the 450 churches in Rome, only ONE is Gothic.
The tardy unification of ITALY slowed down Roma's growth until after 1870.
But after this expansion began rapidly, first on the Esquiline-Caelian hills (in 1874), then along the main roads out of Roma.
The construction of new bridges over the TEVERE (20 road-bridges) opened up new quarters and a new garden city at MONTESACRO was cuilt in the ANIENE valley.
TESTACCIO, the commercial sector of 'classical' ROMA, has become an industrial area, after the plan of 1883 had been put into effect.
The Fascist plan of 1925 promoted development betwen the VIA OSTIA and the VIA CRISTOFORO COLOMBO.
South of LARENTINA, Roma's newest garden city has developed since the a936 plan, stimulated by the 1960 OLYMPIAD.
