Ritratto di Andrea Doria como Nettuno (1540) -- Agnolo Bronzino, Brera

Speranza

Genoese Andrea Doria, one of the greatest admirals of his day, adopted Nettuno as his namesake.

A statue of Doria in the guise of the sea god was commissioned from the Florentine Baccio Bandinelli, and an allegorical bronze plaquette showing Nettuno urging the admiral on to greatenss was made by Leone Leoni.

The most astonishing of these images is unquestionably that by Bronzino, in which Doria's resolute head sits atop the muscular, assertively nude body of Nettuno holding a trident.
