Horse Island, Long Island Sound.

Speranza

Horse Island -- 17 acres (6.9 ha) -- is maintained by Yale's Peabody.
A large house on the island has been kept in good repair and can serve as a base for those remaining on Horse island for over night stays or longer.
The origins of the island's name, "Horse," are not known.
Some say that, at some point, a cargo of horses may have found its way to the island from a capsized or wrecked ship.
Alas, no physical or documentary traces of such an event exist.
Others speculate that it's the island's horse-shoe shape may have influenced its name. (But then, why isn't it called "Horse Shoe Island"?).
For many years it was owned by Jonathan Clark -- and was indeed called "Clark's Island" by everyone.
When James Rettger purchased the island from the Clark Estate in 1946 and herestored the original name, "Horse Island", as found on the geodetic survey maps.
