Speranza
The scene is inspired by Tasso's GERUSALEMME LIBERATA.
The sorceress ARMIDA and RINALDO, who has been seduced by her.
He is thus distracted from his duties as a crusader.
They are seen during a dalliance in a woodland setting.
The enchantress is contemplating her image in a mirror, a 'crystal mirror, bright, pure, smooth and neat', in the poet's words.
In a completely self-referential and narcissitic manner, she crowns herself with a garland of white and red roses in front of the dazed and enthralled RINALDO, who has fallen prey to a disturbance of the senses that has, at this point, cluded his mind.
