ARGOMENTO
Al. tempo di Comhal, figlio di Trathal e padre di Fingal, Clessamorre , figlio di Thaddu e fratello di Monza, madre di Fin al, fu s into dalla tem ecta nel fiume Clyde, sul e rive al quale stava aldutha, città che apparteneva ai Britanni di qua dal muro. Egli fu ospitalmente ricevuto da Reuthamiro ch’ era ilRe, o 51gfl01‘8 del luogo , e n’ ebbe in moglie Moina, unica figlia di quel Re. Renda, figlio di Como, 011’ era un signore britanno innamorato di Moina, venne in casa di Reulhamiro, e trattò apramente Clessamorre. Vennero alle mani, e Renda re. stò ucciso. I Britanni del suo È‘e uito si rivolsero tutti contro di Clessamorre, di mo o ch’ egli fu co‘ stretto a gettarsi nel fiume, e ricovrarsi a nuoto nella sua nave. Spiegò le vele, ed essendogli il vento favorevole, gli venne fatto di uscir in mare. Tentò più volte di ritomarsene , e di condur seco in tempo di notte la sua diletta Moina; ma rispìnto sempre dal vento, fa forzato a desistere. Moiua lasciata gravida diede alla luce un fanciullo, e da lì a poco morì. Reulhamiro impose al fanciullo il nome di Carlhon, cioè mormorio dell’ onde, in memoria della tempesta che , come credevasi, avea fatto perire suo Eadre. Avea Carthon appena tre anni, quando Com
al, padre di Fingal, in una delle sue Scorrene contro i Britanni, prese ed abbruciò Balclutha. Reulhamiro fu ucciso in battaglia, e Carlhon fu trafugato dalla matrice che si rifugio nell’ interno della Breb tagna. Carthon fatto adulto deliberò di Vendicare lo distmzione di Balclutha sopra la posterità di Cqmhal. Fece vela colle sue genti dal fiume Clutha, e giunto

sulla costa di Morven, abbatte sulle prime dfle -d!l“’ guerrieri di Fingal: finalmente venuto a singolar battaglia con Clessamorre suo padre, da lui non conosciuto , restò da quello miseramente ucciso. Que< sta e la storia che serve di fondamento al presente poema, il quale contiene la spedizione e la morte di Carthon. Le cose antecedenti vengono artificiosa< mente raccontate, come per episodio, da Clessamorre a Fingal. Il poema si apre la notte precedente alla morte di Carthon, mentre Fin al tornava da una spedizione c’entro i Romani stabi 'ti nell’Inbilterra. E indirizzato a Malvina, vedova di Oscar, figlio del poeta,
