THE FRESCOES by Battista TIEPOLO in the ballroom of the PALAZZO LABIA (1747) -- VENEZIA

Speranza

These are beautiful things.

The palazzo LABIA was obviously owned by the LABIA family.

The Labia family, as the name implies, was of Catalan origin. They arrived in Venezia in the early sixteenth century.

They amassed their wealth through the manufacture and trade of high-quality textiles.

In 1646 they were able to join the ranks of the Venetian nobility by paying 100,000 ducats to the State treasury, which had been depleted by the extended war against the Turks over CANDIA.

They immediately proceeded to construct a palace with one facciata overlooking the CAMPO DI SAN GEREMIA and the other overlooking the meeting point of the RIO DI CANNAREGIO and the Grand Canal.

The frescoes include:

MEETING OF MARCANTONIO e CLEOPATRA
Banquet of MARCANTONIO e CLEOPATRA
Plutone abducting Persephone
Nobility conquering Envy
Bellerofonte ascending towards glory and eternity
