As the nineteenth century progressed, the classical character of the Grand Tour to Italy did change.
With ever-greater number of English travellers -- not just aristocracy -- making the Tour, it lost the aura of EXCLUSIVITY which undoubtedly played a big part in its 'popularity' during the eighteenth century.
