As an academic discipline classical archaeology is barely more than a century old.
Its firm foundation was laid in the later decades of the 19th century when excavations began to reveal quantities of original sculpture in Greece at sites described by the ancient authors.
Two very famous examples of such excavations are the German at Olympia from the 1870s and the French at Delphi from the 1890s.
