History[edit]
In 1880, William Wilcox established a dairy in the area near Colorado Springs that was purchased in 1885 by Count Pourtales, who formed the 1888 Cheyenne Lake, Land and Improvement Company (Cheyenne Lake was built in 1889 for $25,000.)[6] The 1891 Broadmoor Casino ("The Broadmoor Hotel and Casino" by 1898) was built "5 miles southwest of [the] Postoffice" on the "carriage road" to Cripple Creek and the "Cheyenne Canon street car line" and was managed by the Broadmoor Land Company[5] which developed the suburb's tracts. The Cheyenne Mountain Country Club on the Broadmoor plain[3] (5 Lake Av)[7] was established by 1898;[5] additional 19th century Broadmoor facilities included the "Broadmoor house"—which had the offices of the Broadmoor Dairy[5]:255and by 1916; the Broadmoor Electric Light Plant at 9 Lake Circle, the Cheyenne School at 8 Hazel Av, and the Potter Estate ¾ mile "w of Casino".[7] Also by 1916, Lake Avenue had been built to Lake Circle and the casino, and the Broadmoor was a "fashionable suburb with many beautiful mansions" as well as the firing range of the Colorado Springs Gun Club on the Vine/7th corner; the Branigan and Starsmore farms along Canon City Rd; the Hughes farm southeast of the casino and on "County rd"; the DeMarco, Hagerman, Hemenway, and Myron Stratton Home farms.[7]In 1918 the current Broadmoor Hotel and its Broadmoor Golf Club opened and in 1919, aircraft flights began to/from the hotel's neighboring fields[8] where Army Air Forces subsequently held World War II maneuvers.[9]
Annexation[edit]
After the "Reannexation of [the] Southwest Annex" area of 6,079.02 acres (2,460.09 ha) in 1980, on October 1, 1981, the "Deannexation & Reannexation of the Broadmoor Addition" of 2,128.96 acres (861.56 ha)[10] was 1 of 5 Colorado Springs suburb annexations (cf. Ivywild, Cheyenne Canon, Skyway, and Stratton Meadows) for which the Colorado Supreme Court "overturned a district court decision that voided the annexation".[4] The neighborhood's Broadmoor Shooting Grounds closed after hosting a 1996 FITASC championship, andMap with perimeter of neighborhood |
