Giacinto

Speranza

Acccording to the poet Nonnus, in his "Dionysiaca", the festival of Amyclae, the Hyacinthiae, included the singing of a brief hymn, which apparently went as follows:

Giacinto, with the fine head of hair,
Apollo brought him back to life.

----

The songs speaks of resurrection.

Giacinto's death is TEMPORARY.

The antique tradition does NOT say that Giacinto was "transformed" into the 'giacinto'.

It, rather, says, that APOLLO caused the plant to grown FROM Giacinto's body -- or that it grew from the blood that flowed from his wound.

According to Pliny and Dioscorides, the 'giacinto' has very interesting properties. It could delay puberty, and slave traders used it when they dealt in adolescents.

---

With the blood of the hero -- and remember that Spartan military initiation and training resulted in genuine wounds from which real blood flowed -- what flows out of him is his adolescence.
