Hippolytus of Sicyon -- and Apollo

Speranza

That Hippolytus of Sicyon is little known makes it certain that Plutarco had sources available to him that are unknown to us.

Ippolito was a warrior hero in Sparta.

In the tragedy that Euripides wrote about him, Ippolito becomes a fanatic hunter, entirely absorbed in his passion and hostile to women.

Surrounded by young friends -- the idea of male fraternity -- Ippolito wishes to remain absolutely chaste.
