Il "San Sebastiano" di Vittoria, San Francesco della Vigna

Speranza

This is the first statue in which Vittoria employs motifs from BUONARROTI.

Vittoria's model is the "DYING SLAVE" of Buonarroti, despatched to France in 1544.

Vittoria modifies the elevation of the left elbow and the position of the head.

Vittoria later must have obtained a copy of Buonarroti's REBELLIOUS SLAVE". When Vittoria carved a statue of St. Jerome for the Frari, he had studied it so thoroughly that he could invest his figure with a continuity of movement that is truly Michelangelesque.
