Cerere
While CERERE is the godess of agriculture, this
statue is distinctly male.
It may have been a mistaking in titling this
engraving.
It should be Bacchus, no doubt, as his head is adorned with grapes,
and he is holding grapes up in both hands.
Copper stipple engraving by Francesco Rebagli. Ca.
1780
Clean. Very wide margins. Some miniscule traces of
age and use.
31 x 19.5 cm (12.2 x 7.7").

ANTINOO
Antinous was the lover of Roman Emperor Hadrian.
The well proportiend, good looking youth drowned in the river Nile, only 19
years of age. His death still puzzles: Was it an accident, suicide, murder?
Grieving Hadrian proclaimed Antinous a God. Busts of the beautiful youth were
erected, coins were struck, gems were with his image. Antinous was also depicted
as Roman Bacchus, as god of fertility with grapes. Here Antinous is holding a
cornucopia with grapes.
Copper etching by Henri-Guillaume Chatillon (1780 -
1856) after a drawing
by Francois Louis Dejuinne(1786 - 1844). From
“Musee Francais. Recueil des plus beaux Tableaux, Statues et Bas-Reliefs qui
existaient au Louvre avant 1815" Artwork in the Louvre in Paris before the year
1815). Paris, 1829.
Very beautifully conserved, clean etching with very
wide margins. Miniscule traces of age and use. Watermark.

Here, again, we offer to our classically minded
clients a wonderful set of copper etchings depicting antique statues well known
to all of us who feel a deep appreciation for our cultural ancestry. We happily
meander through mythological terrain, reminiscent of our first encounter with
the classics at school, at college or, travelling, at various museums and
archiological sites. While we cannot ever possess one of the original statues,
we can use to decorate the walls of our homes or offices with the antique copper
etchings printed in 1704 to our own and the delight of our friends and guests.
The statues in sandstone watercolor surrounded by
gouache in velvety black. White paper margins. All prints matted in elegant grey
with gold inlay frame. (See sample). Page size: 47,5 x 35,3 cm (18.7 x 13.9").
