Bernini was inspired for his martyrdoms of "Lorenzo" and "Sebastiano" by the figure of Christ in Michelangelo's
"Pietà". In the "Sebastiano", there are recollections, even, of Michelangelo's late "Pietà", now in the Catheral of Florence, but then in Rome.
The increased mastery of Bernini's "Sebastiano" demonstrates how quickly Bernini learned, and how earily he can rival his exemplars.
