Capt. Samuel Nicoll's cottage, Great Neck, Stratford, Long Island Sound

Speranza

A close-up.

In 1818, Capt. Samuel Nicoll built a manor house on his 150-acre farm at the west end of Great Neck, Stratford, Long Island Sound.

Privateering in the War of 1812 netted him 1,5 million dolalrs in spoils.

His house is still there, at 139 Fourth Avenue.

This is a close-up of the house nearly rich Captain Samuel Nicoll provided for himself and his wife Elvira.

The farm was called "Lordship Manor" from an ancient deed.

  1. How great it was to find this. I lived at 268 4th. ave. in the 50s. Never knew then about the rich history of the town or my street. Moved to ca. in 1960 when i was 10. went back in 2000 and saw it all again in a new light.
