Drawing from and the study of the ANTIQUE were fro BERNINI the basis of art.

From first to last he relied on ANCIENT examples as the source of his inspiration.

In some some statues this is apparent, as in the "Apollo" (e Dafni) or in the church of Ariccia.

In his more mature statues, the ANTIQUE sources can be found ONLY by reconstructing his creative process by means of the preliminary DRAWINGS that happen to survive.
