The phrase, "the masculine masquerade" requires some scrutiny.

It might mean that there are multiple masquerades, and that we are to consider the masculine masquerade only.

Or, it might mean that there are MULTIPLE masculinities, with one or more of them being a masquerade, and the other or others by implication not, with us being invited to consider that masculinity which IS a masquerade.
